IoT Light
Remotely controlling our office light via an HTTP request
When we moved into our current office space in 2014, we received an awesome gift from our friends at Catalyze Chicago at our open house. This “rocket light” was a hit and lit up our office that night.
As time went on, we found ourselves not using the light very much as there wasn’t an on/off switch. Seeing the dust collect on the gift, we decided there must be a better way. What if we could remotely control the light? That way we control the light from anywhere in the world and flex our circuit building muscles.
What sounds simple on the surface has some surprising complexity as we had to procure a few components (WiFi shield, relay, breadboard) to complete the task. I can thankfully say that we figured it out and can now see our light shining brightly. We even got a chance to share the lessons learned at a Chicago Internet of Things (IoT) conference known as Windy City Things.
